Horizontal Well Testing System Advantages

1. Always 'Real Time', not just one pressure output.

All the down hole tool functions are monitored from the surface:

  • 2 formation pressures
  • 1 recovery pressure gauge
  • 1 hydrostatic pressure gauge
  • 1 inflate pressure gauge
  • 1 surface pressure gauge

With all these gauges, you get a better understanding of the test dynamics. You get more pieces to the puzzle.


2. Inflate System

  • Normally a Straddle configuration (min. 20.5 ft.- 80 ft.)
  • For the first test, packers are underbalanced, result is that they are compressed against the mandrels.
  • If we hit a tight spot running in the well and loose 10,000 lbs, we will stop and work thru this area. Other inflate systems are forced to pull out of the hole and change packers out.
  • For 7 7/8" open hole, our packers can extend out to 10 inches. At that size we would only be able to get a seat in shallow in- gauge well bores.
  • We can monitor the inflate pressure during the test & top up the packers at any time, we use less inflate pressure than other systems.

3. Closed Chamber

  • Start every test as a closed chamber test, can open up if required.
  • We get another confirmation of valve open.
  • We can determine inflow of gas vs. liquids. We can quantify the amount of gas using the density of the mud initially.

4. Logging on Depth

We have done many studies and have published papers on the need.


5. Recovery Logging

After the test is over we can log the density of the fluid recovery inside the pipe. We can identify oil, water, mud, and gassy oil, etc. Using our dump bailer we can take a sample of the fluid and bring to surface before reversing the string.


6. Multiple tests on one run in the well.

We have done up to 5 DST's on one trip.


7. No Pipe Movement

There is no rotating or up and down movement of the drill string, other than depth adjustment if required after correlating.


8. Customers can watch in Real Time

With our internet site you can view all the data during the test. Every gauge is available and you can use the chat window to ask questions or change test times with our test Engineer or our reservoir specialist.


9. Rigging-up Down Hole Tools

  • 3 major pieces are made up on cat walk and picked up through V-doors.
  • Other inflate test systems have 15-25 pieces (rotate pipe string to inflate packers).

10. Test Analysis, Simulations and Modeling

We have proprietary software developed by Lloyd Alexander, 'The father of Closed Chamber testing'. Our reservoir specialist has worked with Lloyd and has over 20 years test analysis experience both for DST, Production Tests, reservoir calculations and regulatory compliance.

This software was developed for production testing at surface. Rather than waiting weeks for a well to build up Lloyd found a solution to reduce the well bore storage effects. When used with our system we eliminate the volume in the production tubing to surface and our minimum interval of just 20.5 ft. further reduces the well bore storage effects.

Even in tight shale we can determine micro Darcy permeability.
